How it works

Useful Wallpapers gives you lock-screen wallpapers that stay useful — quotes, vocabulary, or a year-progress calendar — and refresh automatically through Apple Shortcuts. You don't need to be a Shortcuts pro; this page walks through everything once.

Four steps

    Buy an access code

    Subscribe to one wallpaper for a year. After checkout we email you an access code, that’s your key; no username or password to remember.

    Pick your customizations

    On that wallpaper’s page, set your iPhone version, timezone, colors, and layout. Add your own photo if your plan includes it. Everything saves to your access code.

    Set up the Shortcut once

    We walk you through Apple Shortcuts (a tiny recipe that fetches your wallpaper). Never used Shortcuts? No problem, we explain how to set it up in plain language.

    Tap the daily notification

    Each day the Shortcut app notifies you. One tap runs the Shortcut and refreshes your lock screen. Shortcuts will ask you to tap “Allow” every time — that is normal; Apple wants you to confirm before changing your wallpaper.

Shortcut setup (summary)

After you unlock a wallpaper with your access code, the wallpaper page walks you through the hands-on part. In short:

  1. Copy your personal image link (it includes your access code).
  2. Add our Shortcut from iCloud to the Shortcuts app.
  3. Paste your link into the Shortcut and choose lock screen or home screen.
  4. Run the Shortcut once manually to confirm it works.
  5. Create a daily Time of Day automation that runs the Shortcut
  6. Each day will get a notification promting you to run the shortcut. Press it to refresh the wallpaper.
  7. If you have executed the Shortcut a few times, you might have run out of refreshes (you get 2 per day by default). You can easily request more by entering the wallpaper page where you bought your code, entering your code to view customizations, and then clicking the button to request more refreshes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dynamic iPhone wallpaper?
Instead of a static image, your lock screen can fetch a fresh wallpaper from Useful Wallpapers whenever your Shortcut runs — new quote, new word, or an updated calendar. You customize the look on our site; the Shortcut pulls the latest PNG and sets it on your iPhone.
Do I need an account or password?
No traditional account. You subscribe with your email, receive an access code, and use that code on the wallpaper page and in your Shortcut link. The code is your key for that wallpaper — there is no separate login.
What is an access code?
A long random ID (like a UUID) tied to your annual subscription for one wallpaper type. It unlocks customizations on the site and tells our servers which wallpaper and settings to generate when your Shortcut runs. Treat it like a password — anyone with the code can fetch that wallpaper.
What is Apple Shortcuts?
Shortcuts is Apple’s free app on every iPhone — a list of small automations (“recipes”) you can run with a tap or on a schedule. Useful Wallpapers uses one Shortcut that downloads your personalized wallpaper and applies it. You only set it up once.
Why does Shortcuts ask permission when my automation runs?
Apple asks for confirmation before Shortcuts changes your wallpaper. Each time your daily automation runs — or you tap the notification and run it — tap Allow. That happens every run, not just once. It is by design, not a bug.
Does this work on Android or iPad?
No — Useful Wallpapers is built for iPhone lock screens only, via Apple’s Shortcuts app. iPad and Android are not supported.
How often can my wallpaper refresh?
Each access code includes two refreshes per UTC day (enough for a daily automation plus a retry). If you need more — a failed run, a manual test, or unlocking a shared code — use “Get 5 more refreshes” on your wallpaper page, up to ten stored at once.
